“Ambitions tend to remain undisturbed by realities.”
Frank Herbert, Children of Dune
There is no rule which constricts our desires to the reality around us—in other words, as Steve Jobs said, “People who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” This type of thinking can be a great gift and a great curse. There is no denying that Steve Jobs transformed our modern era with Apple—however, many reports and even the biography written by his daughter all testify to the fact that he was a terrible person. Many times, the very traits that enable great strides in humanity—powerful ambition and unflinching perfectionism—are also what makes people tyrannical and despotic.
There are countless people throughout history who are top performers that treat others poorly. The real proof of success is when one can balance strong overarching vision with the localized treatment of those around them.
